The J-Six QD Handguard System is the evolution of an idea born almost 30 years ago in the prototyping shop at the original Gemtech Suppressors.
Conceived by Jim Ryan — one of Gemtech’s founders — the system was originally developed as part of a forward-thinking modular weapon platform for the M4 carbine. In the late 1990s, when rail handguards were still emerging, the goal was to give shooters true mission-configurable modularity through fast, reliable quick-detach barrel changes. The prototype was hand-built and introduced at the 1998 ADPA/NDIA Small Arms Conference at Fort Benning, Georgia.
Although Gemtech’s primary focus remained sound suppressors, Jim personally wanted to expand the company’s offerings into modular weapon systems. Without support from his partners, the project was set aside and quietly stored away. For nearly three decades it remained a “what if,” waiting for the right platform.
That platform arrived with the Lima-Six belt-fed upper. When Jim first saw the Lima-Six, it became clear this was the ideal host. The project was revived as an independent effort and significantly modernized—starting with 3D-printed proof-of-concept parts and progressing to precision-machined components—while preserving the original vision of simplicity and robustness.
Today, the J-Six QD Barrel/Handguard System delivers exactly what the original concept promised: rapid barrel changes that bring added versatility to the Lima-Six platform. The standalone trunnion assembly accepts interchangeable Barrel Collars, in conjunction with a lever-and-pin locking mechanism, and provides secure barrel changes. Shims accommodate real-world barrel variations, and the entire system is designed to maintain the clean, reliable character of the host platform. The system uses replaceable handguard sleeves, so it can be customized to fit the user's needs (Comes stock with 10" MLOK Handguard)
It’s deeply satisfying to bring a late-1990s personal project — originally conceived by Jim Ryan as the MOWS (Modular Objective Weapon System) while he was a co-founder at Gemtech — full circle and finally give it the platform it always deserved. The J-Six QD system is a completely independent accessory developed specifically to complement the excellent Lima-Six upper with quick-detach barrel capability. We’ve kept the design straightforward, durable, and reasonably priced for shooters who value real modularity.
Whether you’re running short barrels for maneuverability or longer ones for extended reach, the J-Six system adds valuable flexibility to the Lima-Six platform.
